So I had just wrapped up a post about the UX of getting a haircut (seriously) when the iPhone WordPress app ate my post. The app didn’t crash, my post just disappeared when I hit “Publish”.
Unacceptable.
Data Loss is right up there with Exposing Sensitive Data when it comes to “worst UX sins.” Recently Danger/Microsoft lost all Sidekick users’ data, with no recovery possible. Remember when the Magnolia bookmarking service died? Fun.
Losing one blog post is nothing compared to a service imploding and taking all its users’ data with it, but still, what the hell WordPress? You can’t release an official iPhone app that eats posts. It screams “amateur hour” and “not to be trusted.”
To sum up, I hate software that eats my homework, and I never fully trust a cloud app that doesn’t also sync data to my local machine.
Notes:
- I totally trust Gmail, because hey, it’s Google, and if they did lose all my email they’d be doing me a favor.
- I wrote a post about not trusting the cloud a year ago on my old personal blog.
